LED Bulbs:

Q: Why Do LED Bulbs last so much longer?

A: The reason LED bulbs last so much longer is to do with their design and the way they generate light output. When turning on a standard incandescent bulb for example, the thin tungsten filament coiled inside rapidly heats up to glow a hot white light. When the light is turned on or off the expansion and contraction of this filament causes metal fatigue over time, eventually 'burning out' or 'failing'.

LED light bulbs do not have this problem as they have no filaments and don't suffer from metal fatigue as very little heat is generated in the first place to create the light output. When comparing incandescent to LED bulbs this is the big factor in the vast differences in life expectancy.

Q: How long should I expect my LED bulbs to last for?

A: Generally, an LED is expected to have a lifetime of 20,000-30,000 hours or more compared to an incandescent of about 1000 hours.

Q: How is life expectancy calculated?

Generally, life expectancy is calculated based on 365 days per year with the bulb operating 3 hours per day on average. This works out to be exactly 1,095 hours and is when an incandescent bulb is expected to 'burn out'.

LED bulbs are different in the sense that they never 'burn out'. Instead their brightness can slowly decrease over its very long life span to reach a total of 70% of the original lumen output. While the LED bulb technology shows little reason to ever 'fail' and be in need of replacing, the claims of 20,000-30,000 hours as a measure of full life expectancy are based on a bulb reaching it's 70% brightness.

Remember even 20,000 hours is equivalent to 18 years of average use! There is no question the benefits far outweigh the costs when using LED lighting.

Q: What is the difference between Wattage & Lumens?

A: Lumens measure how much light (or brightness) you are getting from a bulb, also referred as the flow of light or 'luminous flux'. More lumens = a brighter light. The wattage (or watts) refers to how much energy the bulb requires to produce this light output. As a rule of thumb, use the term 'lumens' when purchasing bulbs.

Q: Why is the technology moving us away from the incandescent bulb?

A: The humble incandescent light bulb has been around since the late 1800's (Thomas Edison filed a patent in 1879 infact). While an amazing invention for its time, and many decades to follow there have also been key downsides in it's design. The incadensent bulb relies on the heating of a filament to generate light. The majority of energy put into the bulb is lost as heat and formed a highly inefficient use of energy to create any form of light output. The LED bulb marks the next generation of lighting solving this key issue amongst other great benefits.

Q: What does the output colour mean?

A: The output colour is a characteristic of the visible light output; each colour has different uses for different applications. Generally speaking a 'warm white' colour should be between 2700K-3300K and a 'cool white' between 6000K - 6500K. The term of measurement used is called Kelvin (K), the table below provides a visual reference.

Q: How can I safely dispose of my old bulbs?

A: According to the Ministry for the Environment, "Incandescent lamps can be disposed of with the usual household rubbish. Wrap any broken glass in newspaper to prevent injury during handling of the rubbish bags. Energy saving and other mercury-containing lamps, such as the fluorescent tubes, should be recycled to ensure that the mercury is collected and recycled in an environmentally safe manner."

If in doubt, best to contact your local rubbish collection company
